Handwritten letter of John from Saltair to his niece, Hilda Scheffler [Nikl].
Salt Lake City, Utah. Jan 2 - 47.
Dear Hilda - We received your lovely letter one day after Christmas, and we were happy to hear from you. I still have your last letter here. It's been a number of years since you wrote last. How are you doing? You are married now and have a family, don't you? We're doing quite well; after 3 1/2 years [after Lina's death] I married again. Nephi lived with us for 3 years, then he moved to California for a good job or position, as they say. He married three years ago and now has two boys, Robert and Richard. They are two nice children and they can already talk and run around. Hertha wrote us in October at the old address; actually she wrote to Nephi, but he wasn't here, so I sent the letter on to him. He's already sent 8 packages to her, and I've sent one, too. 11 pounds of foodstuffs, but we haven't heard anything from them yet since October. The postal deliveries in Germany are very uncertain and very slow. We are sorry that Erich died in the war and that all of you have had to go through so much suffering. This is already the second big war you've had to go through. I hope that this letter finds you all well, and we greet you cordially - Your Uncle and Aunt.
